The ancient Etruscans mastered the use of the wheel and used to move up and down the peninsula in their sturdy carts. They were a mysterious people and many of their secrets have yet to be unveiled: we only know around 200 words in their language, but their graves suggest that they were a cultured and god-fearing civilisation. The land they inhabited was so influenced by their presence that it came to be known as ‘Etruria’. MY E-TRUSCAN TOUR is a cycling trip which follows the footsteps of these ancient people, travelling along their historic roads carved into the tuff, on the hills from which they ruled their homeland and where the mysterious “lucumoni” (this being the Etruscan word for kings) watched over their towns.

Day 1: Arrival in Marina di Bibbona

Guests make their own way to the Park Hotel Marinetta in Marina di Bibbona by 4pm. Meeting with the conductor, presentation of the tour and introduction to the use of E-bike.

Day 2: Marina di Bibbona - Stazione di Populonia (approx. 50 km)

Leaving the coast behind us, we will cycle among vineyards that produce some of the world’s finest wines (visiting a wine cellar and tasting the wines) until we reach the famous tree-lined avenue of Bolgheri, immortalised by the Italian poet Giosué Carducci.
We will cycle on the flat, along the Via Bolgherese, all the way to Donoratico and then along the coast to San Vincenzo and Populonia, where we will stop off to visit the old Etruscan village and archaeological site of Baratti. Recommencing our journey, we will head for Stazione di Populonia, where this stage ends.

Day 3: Stazione di Populonia-Castelnuovo Val di Cecina (approx. 60 km)

Start to a challenging day, up and down the “steaming hills” of this geothermal region: pedalling in the company of geysers, hot springs and fumaroles. We will cycle through Sasso Pisano, where we will have the chance to bathe in the warm waters of the biolake, heated by the hot springs surrounding it. This stage will end in Castelnuovo Val Di Cecina.

Day 4: Castelnuovo Val di Cecina-Casole d’Elsa (approx. 58 km)

Shortly after setting off, we will come to Larderello, where we will stop off to visit the intriguing Geothermal museum. From there, we will continue on, passing through Pomarance before heading downhill into the valley of the river Cecina which, depending on the water levels, we will cross to reach the enchanting Masso delle Fanciulle. Passing under the imposing Rocca Sillana, we will arrive in San Dalmazio. Cycling above the river Cecina, we will then descend to Casole d’Elsa.

Day 5: Casole d’Elsa - Libbiano (approx. 40 km)

This short stage winds around the renowned vineyards of the famous Vernaccia di San Gimignano, where we will spend most of the day: the Duomo, the Civic Museum, Piazza della Cisterna and the Church of  Sant’Agostino are just some of the main attractions of the town with the unmistakable towered skyline.
We will then continue on to Libbiano, where we will spend the night in an old farmhouse set within a vast agricultural estate.

Day 6: Libbiano - Volterra (approx. 19 - 47 km)

Cycling along dirt tracks and some short sections of tarmac road, we will arrive in Volterra, perched panoramically atop its hill. The town is a hotbed of art and culture, presented in the numerous museums and buildings conserved within the ancient 13th-century, with the ruins of the imposing Roman Amphitheatre just outside.

Day 7: Volterra - Villetta di Monterufoli (approx. 70 km)

Leaving the walls of Volterra behind us and cycling past the Church of San Giusto, we will cycle along the panoramic dirt track which runs through the rolling landscape of le Balze, leading gently on to Val d’Era, at the foot of the medieval village of Montecatini Val di Cecina. Here, we will stop to visit the Mining museum and what remains of the copper mine which was once the largest in Europe. After a long downhill ride to Val di Cecina, we will tackle the uphill slope to Libbiano and the Monterufoli nature reserve. We will then continue along a track through the middle of the woods to the former station of the mining railway in Villetta di Monterufoli, where we will spend the night.

Day 8: Villetta di Montrufoli - Marina di Bibbona (approx. 32 km)

Cycling through the trees, we will cross Caselli forest, with its small lake, reaching the crest of the hill, where we can enjoy an incredible view over the islands of the Tuscan archipelago: Elba, Gorgona, Capraia and, in the distance, Corsica.
We will then head downhill along the track which crosses the Macchia della Magona reserve, heading back towards the sea, where our journey began, bringing our tour to delightful end.
